General RAL safety
Introduction
Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) is a research laboratory with a very broad programme of work. There are consequently a broad range of hazards present at the laboratory with which you may be unfamiliar.
The policy of RAL is quite simply to provide, as far as is reasonably practicable, healthy and safe working conditions for all who work at the laboratory whether or not they are employees, and to require that all these workers follow safe methods of working. The STFC Safety Policy (link opens in a new window) (PDF - link opens in a new window) has been published (December 2010). It spells out the laboratory's safety policy, safety codes (link opens in a new window) (link opens in a new window), safety organisation and safety arrangements.
The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1992, Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998, and Workplace (Health, Safety & Welfare) Regulations 1992 are relevant overarching safety legislation.
The purpose of this Safety Package is to provide more specific instructions as to how the RAL safety arrangements are to be applied within the Central Laser Facility (CLF) to the principal hazards found there and to list persons responsible for safety in the different areas.
