Area safety

  • Local safety cards will identify the local fire escape positions, alarm points and emergency stop systems. These will also identify safety responsible staff for the specific experimental area.

  • Door safety notices will identify laser hazards requiring the use of laser safety eyewear.

  • Some systems may contain in-obvious hazards, such as pressurised gasses or high-voltage equipment. Staff should always be consulted before modifying ANY equipment.

  • Laser hazard notice boards and warning sirens are installed in each target area.

  • Visitors wishing to view a target area can do so, but only at the express authorisation of the Area Operator (AO).

  • Laser beamlines should NOT cross any access points at eye level.

  • Care must be taken to ensure that lasers DO NOT back-propagate along beam lines, introducing potential hazards and possible potential failure of the laser system.

  • Care should be taken to ensure that converging back reflections DO NOT approach any optical components. Such reflections can cause single shot bulk damage.

  • Experimental areas may contain confined spaces, such as deep trenches or large interaction chambers. Working within these areas must be authorised and relevant training provided by STFC staff.
