Lasers for Science Facility

Professor Tony Parker

Lasers continue to play a major role in modern day research and it is fair to say have impacted on all branches of science. The Lasers for Science Facility offers one of the most concentrated and versatile array of laser systems and expertise in the world and I invite you to use the links below to browse through the numerous laser laboratories we have available. Access to the facility for UK academics is via a peer reviewed application and calls take place twice a year. In addition we perform EU and commercial work and also have several lasers available for UK academics to use at their home institutions.

The recent strategy document has provided a way forward as outlined in the recent User Consultation exercise, the presentations can be found here in relation to the up and coming move into the The Research Complex.

The available experimental techniques are:

Molecular Structural Dynamics: Time-resolved linear and non-linear mid-IR and Raman spectroscopy, 2DIR, Kerr gated Raman, fs-stimulated Raman, fs to ms timescales.

Functional Biosystems Imaging: Integrated capability comprising multidimensional single molecule imaging, fluorescence lifetime imaging, optical trapping, ultra-high resolution microscopy, advanced data imaging processing (e.g. Bayesian segmentation)

These resources are complemented and supported by a comprehensive biology laboratory, sample manipulation using optical tweezers and sample preparation and diagnostic facilities which will be available within the Research Complex. In addition, expert scientific collaborative support will be given at all stages of experimental programme from concept to publication.

The STFC Biomed Network exists to provide STFC with an internationally recognised centre for research in biology, medicine and related fields that integrates and promotes collaborations using technologies available within STFC.

The Laser Loan Pool: This provides a range of lasers and ancillary equipment for use at the researcher’s home institution, the programme is funded by EPSRC with the LSF providing technical, scientific and administrative support.
