Economic Impact

The value of a strong science and engineering community has many benefits to the local and national economies both directly and indirectly.

The Central Laser Facility (CLF) conducts research that not only advances fundamental science, but many of its activities lead to social or commercial benefits which have an impact on everyday life. By aligning our goals with that of the government’s Open Innovation Agenda, we intend to deliver a strong Economic Impact output for the benefit of the economy and the well-being of the nation.

“Our strategy is to review regularly the landscape of our scientific and development programmes and identify those areas where strong overall Economic Impact potential exists, whether short term or long term, and create optimum conditions for their timely development.”

With this primary remit in mind our programme intends to encourage, facilitate and actively promote:

  • The further enhancement of our core expertise in photonic sciences and technology
  • Encourage inward investment to the UK through high profile collaborations and projects
  • Formation and support of new spinouts
  • Securing of new intellectual property and its licensing
  • Addressing societal priorities
  • Training of the next generation of scientists
  • Actively seeking partnerships to enhance the Harwell and Daresbury Science and Innovation Campuses (HSIC and DSIC)
  • Educational programmes – internally, externally and through active involvement of industry
