The Laser Loan Pool

We are pleased to announce that EPSRC has funded the Laser Loan Pool Facility grant (EP/G03088X/1); a total of £2.6M has been awarded to fund the facility through to 2014.

The EPSRC Laser Loan Pool is open to UK grant and non-grant holders who are eligible to apply for EPSRC funding.  For further information, please contact Dr Ian Clark.

The facility provides a variety of state-of-the-art commercial laser systems to UK researchers to use at their home institutions, underpinned by technical and scientific support from the Central Laser Facility (CLF).   The aims of the Loan Pool are to

  1. To support newly appointed academics before they have acquired their own home-based lasers
  2. To test the feasibility of experiments prior to major grant applications
  3. To augment peer-reviewed and grant funded research which requires a laser or an additional laser for a series of experiments
  4. To provide laser systems to researchers who have intermittent need

The Loan Pool is operated by the Central Laser Facility's Lasers for Science Facility (LSF) at the STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory.  CLF staff are responsible for laser installation and provide expertise as well as on-site training to scientists in the use of lasers and instrumentation in a range of laser applications.  The borrower must ensure their local laser safety rules are applied.  Loan lasers are typically available for 22 week loans.
